EGLIN LONG-HORN
OF NIGHTSHADE COUNTY by Debra Wert is a story to be
shared and read aloud to children ages ten through twelve.
Studies reveal, however, that older children and adults enjoy
the tale as much as the youngsters, and they learn a great deal
as well. Eglin's story helps people of all ages understand the
short- and long-term health, cosmetic, and social consequences
of smoking, chewing, and dipping tobacco. Eglin is a
long-horned grasshopper who meets and becomes friends with
Varina, a pushy ladybug who knows a great deal about the dangers
of using tobacco. Together they journey back to the tobacco
field to rescue Eglin's family from this horrible weed.
"Although
the author goes in depth when providing information about
tobacco, the curriculum is built to make the learning
interesting to the point that children will not notice
they are being taught. I feel confident that the use of
curricula like this one can provide a strong base to help
shape children's perception about tobacco before they
arrive at middle school." -Ericilia Rodriguez-Westhoff,
MPH
"EGLIN
LONG-HORN OF NIGHTSHADE COUNTY is an excellent book
with many activities that can be used to integrate with
other subjects." - Marcia Dowdy, Fourth-Grade Teacher
"What
a wonderful way to teach children the harmful effects of
smoking and chewing tobacco. The story is written about
insects and other animals which appeal to young readers.
And for teachers it is a great teaching tool to help us
meet many teaching standards in science, health, and
language arts." - Nancy Kyle, Third Grade Teacher
